1. What is the difference between Genuine, OE, OEM, replacement, pattern part etc?

Genuine = Part is packed in a Land-Rover or its predecessors packaging, i.e Rover, British Leyland, BLMC etc. Can also cover Unipart packed components.

OE or OEM = Original Equipment or Original Equipment Manufacturer. Part is made by a manufacturer who currently or used to, supply the factory direct. Part may or may not be in OE packaging, but the component will be marked in some way. Part may even be supplied in Land-Rover marked packaging.

Replacement = Part is a generic reproduction or copy. May be a 'quality second' from the OEM.

Pattern part = Interchangeable term with 'replacement', but generally used for inferior quality copies.

1948 - Chassis number 861501, Main Gear Lever housing fitted to top of gearbox.

1949 - Chassis number 06100280, Air Intake Elbow changed to oval profile.

November 1949 - Chassis number 06103841, 'Eared' type Front Bumper fitted to Land-Rover 80.

November 1949 - Chassis number 06103885, Gearbox number 06104015, Yellow knob fitted to Freewheel Lever Assembly.

1949 - Chassis number 06105379, Late type Hand Brake Lever without separate grip fitted.

1949 - Chassis number 06105831, Late type Speedometer Cable fitted to Land-Rover 80.

March 1950 - Chassis number 06110305, 'Spade' type seat backs and later back body fitted to Land-Rover 80.

1951 - Chassis number 26100001, 'T' shaped Front Grille and door handles fitted to Land-Rover 80.

1951 - Chassis number 26102281, 'Square' type seat backs fitted to Land-Rover 80.

1955 - Chassis number 111600001, Recirculating type steering unit fitted to 88" and 109" models.

April 1958 - Series 2 model introduced.

May 1960 - Screw type Vent Controls changed to Quadrant type.

September 1961 - Series 2a model introduced.

July 1962? - Front Axle number 24109241, Cone and Spring type damping replaced with Railko bush type top swivel with bottom steering arms introduced.

September 1962 - Series 2a Forward Control model introduced.

March 1963 - Chassis suffix 'B', UNF threaded shackle pins replace BSF threaded type on 88" and 109" models.
March 1963 - Chassis suffix 'B', Second type Front Panel with sealed beam 'flush' type head lamp units introduced.

January 1964 - 'Curved' front apron replaces 'Flat' type.

September 1965 - Chassis suffix 'C', Plastic spoke steering wheel fitted to 88" and 109" models.
September 1965 - Chassis suffix 'C', Narrow type sill panels fitted to 88" and 109" models.

September 1966 - Series 2b Forward Control model introduced.

April 1967 - Chassis suffix 'D', 'Long' type hand brake lever fitted to 88" and 109" models.
April 1967 - Chassis suffix 'D', Vehicles changed to negative earth system.
April 1967 - Chassis suffix 'D', Lucas DR 3A Single type Wiper Motor (Square body) fitted to 88" and 109" models.
April 1967 - Chassis suffix 'D', Front Seat Safety Harness and Anchorage fitted as standard to Home Market models.

May 1967 - 6-cylinder engine fitted to 109" 'Regular' models.
May 1967 - Flat heater introduced.

February 1968 - Chassis number 24131337D, CV type Brake Master Cylinder replaces CB type on 88" models.

January 1969 - Chassis suffix 'F', CV type Brake Master Cylinder replaces CB type on 109" 4-cylinder models.
January 1969 - Chassis suffix 'F', Diesel Engine Speed Hand Control moved to glove box.
January 1969 - Chassis suffix 'F', Lucas 75664 Single type Wiper Motor (Round body) fitted to 88" and 109" models.
January 1969 - Chassis suffix 'F', Mechanical Stop Lamp Switch replaces hydraulic type. (4-cylinder models only)

April 1969 - Chassis suffix 'G', Headlamps moved to wings (fenders). Third type Front Panel. 'Cross' type Front Grille.

October 1969 - 17,833 CKD vehicles are discovered to be mistakenly stamped as suffix 'D' instead of 'F'.

June 1970 - Range-Rover introduced.

February 1971 - Chassis suffix 'H', M16 threaded Wheel Nuts introduced.
February 1971 - Chassis suffix 'H', Salisbury Rear Axle fitted as standard to 109" models.

October 1971 - Series 3 model introduced.

October 1972 - Chassis suffix 'B', Bendix/Facet type Fuel Pump replaces double ended SU type on 6-cylinder models.

November 1972 - Choke switch on 2.6 Petrol Cylinder Head discontinued.

August 1974 - Fully threaded Steering Ball Joints fitted.

September 1974 - 1-Ton models change from Salisbury to Rover type Front Axle.

??? - Chassis suffix 'C', Bayonet fixing for 109" Rear Fuel Tank Sender Unit introduced.
??? - Chassis suffix 'C', 109" Station Wagon models fitted with rear exit exhaust system.

November 1975 - Large demister vents changed to small type.

November 1975 - Type 4 bulkhead introduced with mix of UNF and metric fixings.

December 1976 - 88" RHD models fitted with curved end exhaust tail pipe.

February 1979 - Series 3 109 V8 introduced for Export markets only.

October 1979 - Reverse gear selector gate fixings change to 'horizontal' type.

November 1979 - 14 digit VIN codes introduced for 4 and 6-cylinder models.

March 1980 - Deluxe trim seats fitted as standard to 109 V8.

July 1980 - 11" Twin Leading Front Brakes fitted to 88" models.

August 1980 - Series 3 109 V8 introduced for Home market.

October 1980 - 88" and 109" (not 109 V8) models converted to one piece Stub Axles and late type Hub Oil Seals with 'metric' wheel bearings.

1981 - 4-cylinder engines re-designed as 5 main bearing units.

April 1982 - Introduction of 'County' specification for Station Wagon models.
April 1982 - Introduction of HCPU variant for 109" Basic models.

March 1983 - Introduction of 'Land Rover One Ten' model. Introduction of '127' model.

October 1983 - Series 3 models fitted with plastic hub caps.

February 1984 - 2.5 NA Diesel replaces 2¼ Diesel engine.

June 1984 - Introduction of 'Land Rover 90' model.

VIN JA912389 - 110 Defender Windscreen Hinges changed to brackets.

1993 Model Year:
VIN KA930455 - 90 Defender - Last 1993 model year VIN.
