Also, early Series 3 models used the 'shouldered' or partially threaded ball joints, upto axle suffix 'D'. The VIN change point is unknown.

Later models used the 'fully-threaded' type. THEY ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE.

Using the wrong type ball joint with the wrong steering tube can lead to premature failure and even result in death. It has happened.
